ABSTRACT
The atlas of space images and maps is prepared jointly
by the experts of the Soviet Union and GDR under the auspices of
the "Intercosmos" programme, It is compiled according to the
interpretation results of images, taken by the MKF — 6 camera
from the "SOYUS-22" spaceship and covering naturally diverse
areas of the USSR and GDR, which included the coast of the Baltic
sea, the central part of GDR, the North-eastern Caspian, the
Southern Baikal region, Central Yakutia, South-east Kazakhstan
and Central Asia,
The Atlas presents image application in the following
fields of geographical studes and thematic mapping: shallow water
studies - tectonic strusture, bottom landforms, bottom sediments,
underwater vegetation, underwater landscapes; landform studies -
tectonic structure, geomorphology; glaciological and hydrological
studies - the study of glaciation, thermokarst relief, channel
processes, pollution of water bodies by river flow discharge;
the study and mapping of soil-vegetation cover and landscapes-
vegetation of arid areas, south-taiga, north-taiga mountain
forests, arid and mountain taiga; agricultural studies - the
mapping of land use and crops; the study of populated places and
their systems; the study of anthropogenic impact upon the natural
environment and conservation.
The Atlas is published on the polygraphic basis of GDR
in three languages - Russian, German, English.
Multiband space photography is being steadily put into
effect, emerging as one of the most efficient methods of space
exploration of the Earth. The wide applicational scope of this
method is revealed in the atlas of space images and maps "Inter-
pretation of multiband aerial and space images", prepared jointly
by the specialists of the Soviet Union and GDR in compliance with
the interstate agreement between the USSR and GDR and according
