Quasi-DTA: A Technique for the Determination of Transformation
Temperatures at High Cooling Rates
The quasi-DTA-apparatuses developed in the iron works of Breitenfeld are described and
their applicability is shown. The technique is characterized by the use of a RC-part instead
of a material reference sample. This makes it possible to follow transformations of high
cooling rates according to the principle of DTA. Radiation heating and a cooling device with
water mantle allow both high heating and cooling rates.
The investigation of the temperature distribution in the specimen through both infrared
photography and temperature measurement with different thermocouple arrangements gave
the result that during radiation heating practically the same temperature exists Over the u
entire specimen surface. The steel X 210 Cr 12 which was predominantly used for these N
investigations acts as an excellent indicator with respect to the austenizing temperature,
since its Ms-point responds sensitively to differently high austenizing temperatures.
The applicability of the quais-DTA to the following of transformations in the pearlite,
bainite and martensite region could be shown by the example of the air hardening chromium
steel X 210 Cr 12 and of three unalloyed carbon steels with high critical cooling rate.
