Influence of carbide distribution on the toughness of ledeburtitic tool
steels
Abstract
Cross-rolled "Regulit’-plates exhibit uniform properties in longitudinal and transverse
direction concerning dimensional stability during heat treatment as welll as
thoughness.
The investigation was carried out on unnotched specimens made from "Regulit’-plates
and conventional bar material both of grade X155CrVMo12 1 (1.2379, Bohler K110).
In the case of cross-rolled "Regulit"-plates there is no significant difference in
toughness between longitudinal and transverse direction whereas the transverse
values of the bar material are considerably lower than the longitudinal values.
I
The metallographic investigation of the broken specimens showed that the crack path
runs alternately through the matrix and the carbide bands.
The evaluation of the crack propagation by means of quantitative structural analysis
showed that the impact energy is the lower the longer the crack runs within carbide
bands or carbide clusters.
As expected the best toughness values were achieved with specimens without carbide
bands made from the powder metallurgical steel X220CrVMo13 4 (1.2380, Böhler
K190 Isomatrix PM).
As a result of the investigation the validity of the model of Fischmeister and Olsson for
explanation of the different toughness of longitudinal and transverse specimens made
from ledeburitic steels could be impressively confirmed by use of unnotched impact
bending test.
