The 34th Metallography Conference of the Deutsche Gesellschaft fiir Materialkunde took place at the same
lime as international conference of metallography "EUROMET 2000" under the auspicies of the federation of
European Materials Societies (FEMS). Participants from XX countries met on 13.-15. September in
Saarbriicken for the exchange of the newest scientific results but also of practical experiences in preparation Lhe
and characterisation of materials. With the help of an international advisory board, the members of the Plenc
program committee from research and industry composed a manifold information program in order to
accomodate the large spectrum of qualifications of metallographers up to applied scientists and to stimulate the or
communication between them. X

Seven sessions were devoted to the continued education of the participants concerning the actual topics of Raster
dynamic metallography: the quantitative surface analysis, the high-resolution microscopy, the quantitive Vere
metallography, ceramic materials and compounds, and last but not least the preparation using new methods and (I
for new materials. Internationally renowned experts were invited to present the state of the art of each topic %
in an overview lecture. Furthermore, the sessions were completed by succinct short lectures. oo
To a remarkable amount the possibility of poster presentations was taken advantage of, which therefore
developed into an increasingly important forum for communication, also for the manyfold daily problems and Nero
their solutions in metallography. The posters of Wasmund et al., Trempler, and Miller and Mosler received the Ton
Best Poster Award, manifesting the outstanding quality of the work. N :
Besides the traditional and important company exhibition also thethree tutorials by well-known scientist with nr
the topics "Advanced Preparation Procedures with new Comsumables and Equipment”, "Microscopy of
Polymers", and "3-Dimensional Microstructural Reconstruction" contributed to a very practically oriented N
benefit of the participants. Furthermore, the internet-cafe, which was offered for the first time, was well ’
accepted and stimulated to browse the materialography platform www.materialography.de and the linked, in
the meantime manifold, information and communication offers.

These proceedings can naturally only represent a limited part of the mentioned topics. Here, | would like to Uhse
thank all who contributed fo the success of this meeting, especially the members of the program committee, Lo
the local committee and the team of the DGM, who is also responsible for the technical composition of these Ans
proceedings. CL
I wish all readers a large benefit on reading of this book.
