and tlie result will be the hour angle E. of meridian ; should the remainder he more than
24 hours reject 24 hours, and the result will be the hour angle W. of meridian.
From apparent time being the time kept at sea the first rule will be found the most
simple in practice. The above rules for a star will also apply to the determination of the
hour angle of the moon or planets.
With reference to the note at the foot of each page of the Azimuth Tables, as the Sun in
the forenoon or a.m. is east of the meridian, and in the afternoon or p.m. west of the
meridian, in applying the note to denote the bearing of a star substitute E. of meridian
for a.m. and W. of meridian for p.m.
N.B.—In taking from the Tables the azimuth or bearing of the star the hour angle of
the star must always be taken from the right hand column of the page, under apparent
time p.m.
Example .—On 3rd October 1894 a vessel in latitude 49° N., longitude 10° W., steering
east, at 7h. 20m. p.m. apparent time observed the bearing of Arcturus by the azimuth or
standard compass to be N. 62° 30' W. Required the deviation, the variation on the chart of
magnetic curves being 23° W.

By referring to the Azimuth Tables for latitude 49° (Declination —same name as
Latitude) and 5h. 49m. in the right hand or p.m. column, under declination 20° is 78° 43'
and, as the star is W. of meridian, must be read N. 78° 43' W.
