THE SIGNIFICANCE OF TOPOGRAPHIC RELIEF 
IN AIR PHOTO ANALYSIS OF LANDSCAPE PATTERN

ABSTRACT 
The surface configuration of a landscape reflects its geomorphic 
origin that may be recognized on aerial photographs. A systematic analysis of 
topographic relief features on a stereo-model provides a firm base for the 
evaluation of physical land characteristics, its engineering or biological 
properties, capabilities and limitations. 
Some common types of relief pattern and diagnostic values of its 
components are described and illustrated.

La configuration surfacique d’un paysage reflète son origine 
géomorphique qui peut être reconnue sur des photographies aériennes. Une 
analyse systématique des aspects du relief topographique sur un modèle 
stéréoscopique fournit une base ferme pour l'évaluation des caractéristiques 
physiques du terrain, ses propriétés, potentialités et limitations du point du 
vue du génie ou de la biologie. 
L'auteur décrit et illustre quelques types communs de modèles de 
relief ainsi que des bases permettant d'en diagnostiquer les parties 
constituantes. 
ZUSAMMENFASSUNG 
Die Oberflächengestaltung eines Geländes spiegelt seinen 
geomorphischen Ursprung wider, der sich aus Luftbildern ableiten laßt. Eine 
systematische Analyse von topographischen Geländeformen in einem Stereomodell 
liefert eine zuverlässige Auswertungsgrundlage im Hinblick auf die physische 
Beschaffenheit des Landes und auf seine Eigenschaften, Möglichkeiten und 
Grenzen in technischer und biologischer Hinsicht. 
Einige der häufiger vorkommenden Arten von Geländeformen werden uter 
Angabe von diagnostischen Werten für ihre Komponenten beschrieben und 
illustriert.
