What is Perceptual Organization all about?
Boyer - 6
• Perceptual organization is the ability to impose structural orga
nization on sensory data, so as to group sensory primitives arising
from a common underlying cause.
• It lets us form object hypotheses with minimal domain knowl
edge.
• It imparts robustness and efficiency to the perceptual process by
reducing the search space.
• The importance of perceptual organization in human visual sys
tem was recognized by Gestalt psychologists. Its role in com
puter vision was emphasized and demonstrated much later by
researchers such as Witkin, Tenenbaum, and Lowe.
