SOME RESULTS OF THE INTERPRETATION OF AERIAL
PHOTOGRAPHS OF SEA-ICE AND PROSPECTS OF
FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF AERIAL SURVEYS
FOR THE STUDY OF ICE
by V. I. Avgevich
Geographical Institute, U.S.S.R. Academy of Sciences
Abstract This paper describes the character of newly discovered natural interconnections
between sea-ice and its environment and the regular phenomena which have been observed
during different stages of sea-ice development. First of all, the paper aims to show that under
certain conditions the ice sheet acts as an indicator of the tidal wave propagation. The role
of the ice sheet in the shoreline formation and off-shore bathymetry is another very interesting
feature. The author mentions that in a number of cases the breaking of fast-ice does not
occur spontaneously. As the results of airphoto interpretation have shown, this breaking is
predominantly due to the wave movements of the water masses. In conclusion the author
advocates a systematic elaboration of the data of single vertical air photographs to study the
details of ice drift in the open sea using the mosaic method of the author.
Puis l’auteur men
Thirty years ago, after the cruise of ice breaker “Alexander Sibiryakov”, a
large-scale offensive was launched in the Arctic to place these polar regions at
the service of the national economy of the U.S.S.R. Simultaneously, research
work on the Arctic was undertaken, particularly on the ice regime of the Arc
tic seas. As a characteristic element of the polar landscape and an important
natural factor, sea-ice has always aroused considerable interest on the part of
oceanologists and sailors.
The mapping method comes in for its proper share in the study of ice
