A REPORT ON THE APPLICATION OF AIRPHOTO 
INTERPRETATION IN THE FEDERATION OF MALAYA

Abstract The Federation of Malaya is carrying out an immense programme of national 
construction and development. When engineering projects of an unprecedented scale are 
being executed at an unprecedented speed, it is not surprising that the advantages offered 
by aerial photograph interpretation are being harnessed in the planning and execution of the 
nation’s engineering projects. 
This paper presents some of these projects and the data which were obtained from aerial 
photographs for the prediction and solution of some of the engineering problems. Some of the 
problems arising out of this technique and the use of aerial photography as a tool in the detec 
tion of potential landslides are discussed. 
Résumé La Fédération de Malaisie entreprend actuellement un énorme travail de con 
struction et de développement national. Lorsque des projets techniques doivent être réalises 
à des échelles et dans des temps encore jamais vus à ce jour, il n’est pas étonnant que nous 
ayons adopté les avantages que présente l’interprétation photographique dans l’exécution et le 
planning de nos projets nationaux. 
Cette note traite de quelques uns de ces projects et des données obtenues grâce aux photo 
graphies aériennes qui ont permis de prévoir et de résoudre certains de leurs problèmes. On 
discute également dans cette note quelques uns des problèmes soulevés par la technique et 
l’utilisation des photographies en tant qu’instrument de détection des glissements de terrain 
potentiels. 
Zusammenfassung Die Malayische Föderation arbeitet an einem gigantischen Pro 
gramm nationaler Aufbau- und Entwicklungarbeit. Wenn Ingenieurs-Arbeiten ungeahnter 
Grösse in noch niemals solcher Eile ausgeführt werden, ist es nicht zo verwundern, dass die 
Vorteile der Luftbild-Interpretation für die Planung und Durchführung des nationalen Ent 
wicklungs-Programmes ausgenützt werden. 
Der vorliegende Aufsatz behandelt einige dieser Projekte, sowie die durch die Luftbilder 
gelieferten Daten, mit Hilfe welcher einige der Ingenieurs-Probleme vorausgesehen und ge 
löst werden konnten. Einige dieser Probleme, sowie die Verwendung von Luftbildern als 
Hilfsmittel für die Diagnose von Schlipf-gefährdeten Gebieten werden besprochen. 
During the last decade, and particularly in the years after Independence in 
1957, the Federation of Malaya has been carrying out an immense programme, 
which in the course of time will transform the country, especially the rural 
sector, into one with a more progressive economy. High priority is being given 
to rural development projects to give the rural population a higher level of 
living. Engineering projects are being executed, not only on an unprecendented 
scale, but also at an unprecedented speed. It is not surprising that the advan 
tages offered by aerial photograph interpretation are being utilized in the 
planning and execution of many of the nation’s projects.
