The department consists of appropriate laboratories equipped
for teaching and research as well. The image-processing
laboratory consists of the following sections: analog and digital
photogrammetry. The analog section is equipped with analog
stereoscopic plotting instrument (Wild B-8, A-8). The digital
section has DMS softcopy photogrammetry and SOCOPH.
Socoph is a digital softcopy photogrammetry software
developed by our staff (Suparman, 1998). This software is
based on a PC platform. A number of PC has been used for
laboratory works of the student.
The Internet Prospect
The satellite technology used for earth observation has been
developed substantially during last three decades. However, the
data processing of those satellites has been seldom undertaken
at remote server systems due to the lack of high performance’s
data communication. If this available, the real time data
processing will then becomes a reality. For Indonesia this mean
that remote sensing subject within the ITB curriculum will play
an important role to produce product such as disaster (e.g. fire,
typhoon, flood caused by torrential rain, etc). With this
possibility the dissemination of fire detection
product provided for example, by NOAA to local fire fighting
forces, NGO’s and broadcast media/press and research
organization is not a real problem anymore. Related products
using GIS technology such as fire’s early warning system can
also be produced.
The requirement to establish high performance network services
for R&D was recognized at the APEC Symposium for Realizing
the Information Society Field of R&D Activities in March 1996
as well as the APEC Test-bed Forum in June 1996. In result,
some volunteers agreed to work towards setting up Asia-Pacific
Advanced Network (APAN). In this regard, ITB was decided as
an APAN node. As an APAN node, ITB is responsible for
disseminating product for quick domestic distribution. In case
of disaster product the local disaster information reported by the
end users to the APAN nodes can be published through the
www. This may consider the prospect of Internet as an integral
part of the whole learning process.
The APAN Network Topology is shown in Figure I.
4, CONCLUSION
Since its beginning the surveying education program in ITB has
been developed gradually. The ultimate goal of achieving a
Bachelor of Engineering in Spatial Information is targeted for
vision 2007 in ITB’s effort to be a Center of Excellence in
spatial information education and training. The spatial
information scientist will become an important component of
the total spatial profession in the next decade.
