computing capacity. It is for this reason that the notion of 
pointing the sensor accurately has been raised. 
The presentation of results would also involve unfamiliar 
procedures in that if the results were to be mapped rather 
than providing information in a list then programmes 
would have to be written which would apply the 
classification deduced from the sample to the whole 
parcel. Such a procedure would be a relatively minor 
programming task and well within the capacity of many 
existing GIS systems. The whole of the proposed 
innovation lies clearly in the main-stream of development 
involving the merging of spatial data sets and is a good 
example of the need to create procedures to enable the 
merging of static vector data with information on the 
dynamic features of land cover on a raster format. In this 
case the raster data are sampled but spatially 
identifiable.
