Tab. 3: Classification of control areas
for six forest classes within
the Nuremberg map sheet,
results in percent of verified
area.
Referring to the Augsburg map sheet, the
two wide-spread classes of spruce stands
and deciduous forest show classification
accuracies of more than 90 % (Tab. 4).
The accuracy value of 62 % for mixed
deciduous/ coniferous forest is caused
by the difficulty of delimitating
more or less homogeneous mixed stands
("tree by tree" mixture) for
verification areas.
For comparison, 72 inhomogeneous mixed
stands were additionally evaluated to
find out how accurate the percentages of
deciduous and coniferous wood were
registered. The estimate for the
classification accuracy in heterogeneous
mixed stands provided a weighted mean
value of 91.6 % for the Nuremberg and
Augsburg study site.
In addition to the independent
verification areas in the Nuremberg and
Augsburg study sites, a combinded
dataset of these control areas and trai
ning areas was composed which covers an
area about 2.5 times larger than the
