For the logical navigation of an aircraft on the named taxi way
system the accuracy is between the values mentioned above if a
map matching technology is used.
7 COST FOR THE DATABASE
The costs for a database are mainly dependent of the quality
defined in the data specification. The costs to build a database can
be divided into several blocks. Here the data integration out of
different data sources again shows new cost blocks.
Out of experience it is advantageous to use a conform information
base for all airports to guarantee equal quality.
The information flow to keep the database up to date is a cost
block which can be handled separately as well.
8 DATA ACQUISITION METHODS
The paper maps used up to now are cartographic products where
the topologic information is mapped. The geometry is not bad in
general, but nobody can give a quality information due to the fact
that this was not forced in the traditional requirements.
The GIS systems of the airport will give also very much
information. But for each airport the data has to be transformed
individually. This data source is nevertheless very important to
check the data and to update the data. For the setup of the
database it has to be checked carefully if the transformation
method is the best.
Usually satellite picture have a weak contrast in the apron. But
the geometry has a defined quality. The combination of the
defined quality of satellite pictures and the topological
information of the distributed paper maps is an suitable
information pool to create an airport database useable for some
navigation purposes.
9 RESULTS OF A TEST DATABASE
In a student paper at the university of Stuttgart an airport database
was created out of the data conglomeration taken from satellite
pictures and official paper maps.

Using the map matching technology of IAGB this database has a
sufficient quality for driving in the outer taxiway network and
prevent so-called runway intrusions.
10 INFORMATION QUALITY - A RISK FACTOR /
IMPROVEMENT
A major principle in the safety strategies in air transportation is
the separation of aircrafts. In combination with communication
information about the present traffic on the airport may be
transferred to each aircraft using the aircraft type and the logical
position in the taxiway network. This is controlled on the airport
tower.
Also without changing the infrastructure of the airport the safety
will be increased if the pilot is assisted by finding the way to the
parking position using the right way.
11 SUMMARY
A potentially payable database creation method is described. By
the navigation with this database map matching techniques and
communication are increasing safety on airports. The kill criteria
costs for the databases could lose their relevance by using a
cheap database.
