THE TECHNICAL TOURS
By B. Hallert
In order to give the participants of the Congress a broader impression of
Sweden and particularly of the practical application of photogrammetry in
various aspects, four technical tours were arranged immediately after the con
gress. In accordance with the program the tours were arranged as follows:
Tour 1. Stockholm—Mora (Dalecarlia) (July 27—29)
Tour 2. Stockholm—Mora—Gothenburg (July 27—Aug. 1)
Tour 3. Stockholm—Sundsvall (July 27—28)
Tour 4. Stockholm—Sundsvall—Kiruna—Boden (July 27—Aug. 1)
A brief summary of the tours will be given here.
Tour 1. About 40 participants from 16 countries made the trip to Mora by
buses and private cars. The first stop was made at Gbtlunda (between Örebro
and Arboga) where the Geographical Survey Office of Sweden demonstrated
the field work of the economical mapping of these regions. In a public school
building the various phases of the work were exhibited and discussed.
The next day, the old copper mine Falu Gruva was visited, a unique oppor
tunity for the participants to see one of the basic economic sources of the for
mer position of Sweden as a Great Power in Europe. Further, one of the world’s
oldest mining and lumber companies Stora Kopparbergs Bergslags AB was
demonstrated.
During the trip Falun—Mora some large cadastral reallotments were demon
strated. In Mora the application of terrestrial photogrammetry to culture-
historical purposes among other things were demonstrated by Professor Gerda
Boethius.
Tour 2. The participants of this tour, who travelled together with tour 1 to
Mora, continued by bus from Mora to Karlstad. During the trip the Governor
of Varmland personally demonstrated the scenery and remarkable details of
this beautiful province.
Around Karlstad some examples of town and country planning were demon
strated during the continuation of the trip to Uddevalla. During the route from
Uddevalla to Gothenburg some examples of the application of photogrammetry
to the actual town and country planning work on the West Coast of Sweden
as well as some details of the coastal hydrographic survey were explained by
the local authorities.
Tour 3. About 60 participants from 24 countries took part in this tour, which
was arranged together with tour 4 to Sundsvall. In Idenor, near the town of
Hudiksvall, the field work of the Geographical Survey Office for the economical
mapping in this region was demonstrated by a field survey group. From Hu
diksvall a trip into the Archipelago was arranged on board the hydrographic
survey ship »Gustaf af Klint». The modern methods of coastal hydrographic
survey with the aid of aerial photogrammetry were demonstrated by a group
from the Royal Board of Shipping and Navigation.
Next day, actual cadastral mapping projects were demonstrated by the local
authorities. The photogrammetric forest mapping of the Svenska Cellulosa AB,
one of the largest lumber companies of Sweden was also presented. Later on,
