The grid method for investigating stereoscopic plotters [1] 1s based 
on the use of a grid plate of an accuracy exceeding that of the plotter. 
From simple measurements of the machine coordinates of the grid 
points, some important systematic deformations of the pencils of rays 
may easily be computed. 
It is not necessary that the grid lines form an ideal square net, if only 
the coordinates of the grid intersections are known with high accuracy. 
The determination of coordinates can be made by means of a measu- 
rng machine. There are, however, few accurate machines having a ca- 
pacity that permits the whole size of a 24 X 24 cm grid for 9 X 9 in- 
ches plotters to be measured in one sequence. If a machine with limited 
capacity is available, it is necessary to make the measurements in parts, 
which then have to be numerically connected to each other. 
It is possible to accomplish the testing of a grid with linear measure- 
ments only. As this method seems to imply rather tedious calculations 
for the determination of coordinates, it should be used for checking the 
accuracy of given coordinates only. 
The Division of Photogrammetry at the Royal Institute of Techno- 
logy has acquired a glass grid from Wild, Heerbrugg. The grid (No 
410) is 24 X 24 cm and divided in 1-cm squares. The coordinates for 
each intersection have been determined to .001 mm by the manufacturer. 
In order to check the accuracy of the given coordinates and to develop 
a practical procedure for such measurements, different methods have 
been applied to test the grid. 
I. In a length comparator at the Nobel Institute of Physics in Stock- 
holm, longitudinal coordinates of a few points in each of six lines have 
been measured. For the resulting length coordinates, obtained as the 
arithmetic mean of four independent pointings, the standard error has 
been calculated to .45 microns. The measurements have been compared 
with the corresponding lengths, computed from the given coordinates.
