narrow zones to get the economic advantage of increasing to the
maximum the flying height of the general taking, from which the map
of the strip of land, on which the longilineous work will be projected,
must be drawn. Normally these maps are drawn from 1/2.000 to
1/10.000 scale; an interval of contour lines of 2, sometimes also 5
meters, is required; altimetric precision generally will be equal to the
half of the interval of the contour lines, exceptionally 1/4. Therefore
we can make use of photographs taken from about 3.000 meters of
relative height, being such value limited not so much by the altimetric
precision, as by the possibility of enlargement of plotting apparatus of
which we dispose.
The increase of height and the use of apparatus having a
great possibility of enlargement does not only represent an economical
advantage, less important than what normally would happen {for
the narrowness of the strip of land which must be really mapped, but
constitutes a remarkable technical advantage of the employment of
aerial survey.
The increasing of the flying height and the interpretation of the
photographs, eventually with the help of simple stereoscopes, give the
planner of the work the possibility of adapting to the actual situation of
the ground the choice of the strip on which he wants to make an accu-
rate survey. By other means of surveys probably the execution of
another map, less accurate but on wider extensions, would be needed;
this map could certainly be done by photogrammetry, eventually
employing the same photographs, but it is mostly substituted by the
simple examination of the taken photographs. Interesting works of this
kind have been executed here, in Italy, but as much as I know, the
problems of co-ordination of the various cartographic stages for the
study and the projects of roads (stereoscopic interpretation of the
photographs, pre-map, map of detail) are particularly felt in the
countries which do not dispose of an intermediate scale cartography, as
for instance Brazil. In Brazil, the « Dep. do Estrada de Rodagem » of
the State of S. Paulo has made some interesting successful experiments
of complete application of the method.
On account of the variety of maps for which the photogrammetry
may be requested, the study of the agreement between economy and
accuracy requires very changeable solutions.
We have expressed only one point of view on some of them, not
at all pretending to have given rules applicable to every case.
or not. Generally it is convenient to treat separately the survey of these
