a PREFACE de la première édition* Ç # . ■ est Une science dont l’étude exige mie profonde sagacité réu nie à la sévérité dans le raisonnement, c’est sans contredit l’astrono mie; et c’est cependant dans cette même science, que so commet tent, à ce qui parait, les plus,grandes fautes contre la logique. Cette observationi, plusieurs de mes lecteurs l’auront déjà faite à regret. Les investigateurs des vérités les plus sublimes n’ont pas toujours cherché à développer avec soin tous les raisonnemens qui les avaient guidés daps leurs découvertes-. Il faut même leur pardonner, s’ils, ont quelquefois caché la route qui les avait conduits à la vérité. Mais ceux qui ont donné des traités élémentaires d’astronomie, et qui n’ont fait que réunir ces découvertes , paraissent moins excu sables, de n’avoir pas exposé avec évidence, la route suivie par l’es prit humain dans son plus grand essor, ni l’intime liaison logique de toutes les vérités qui composent l’immense science des mouve- mens des astres. 11 Faut cependant convenir, pour rendre justice a ces mêmes au teurs, que la cause de cette imperfection est plutôt, en terme d’éco le, objective que subjective. Le mécanisme de la partie de l’univers que nous connaissons ou croyons connaître, est tellement composé; le mouvement et l’engrenage des innombrables roues de cette machine sont d’une telle variété, qu’on doit peu s’étonner, si dans l’élude de cette machine on a suivi une méthode peu systématique , si l’on en a examiné au hazard des pièces isolées, et si l’on a dé couvert une roue secondaire ou plus voisine de l’aiguille du ca dran, avant celle qui, quoique moins visible, est le vrai principe
