THE BODY OF THE SOUL What is the body of the soul? Existentially, the body of the soul is a fragment of the universal substance of nature, created by virtue of Divine extramanence, which constitutes the outward might of God. What is the purpose of the existence of the phys- ical form of the soul? he P= RE Sg The essential purpose of everything physical, or nature in general and of the physical body in par- ticular, is the instrumental, illustrative and useful manifestation of spiritual activity and value. Why do we call bodies instrumental forces and forms? Because, as facts prove, the material body has no autonomic spiritual forces; it has neither will nor intellect nor sentiment, but is adaptable only as an instrument for the spiritual expression of volun- tary, intelligent and sentimental forces. It has no autonomic, but only automatic potentiality. The 164
