Les recherches exposées dans ce dernier Chapitre continuent et complètent celles dont il a été question au Chapitre II ; comme celles-ci, elles ont pour but principal de nous faire connaître quelles peuvent être les séries trigonométriques représentant des fonctions données. 57. Théorème de M. Georg Cantor. — Lorsqu’une série trigonométrique est convergente pour tous les points d’un in tervalle, ses coefficients tendent vers zéro. Cela sera évidem ment prouvé si nous démontrons que la série trigonométrique dont le terme général est p n cosn(x — a n ) ne peut converger que pour un ensemble de valeurs de x de mesure nulle lorsque p„ ne tend pas vers zéro quand n croît. En effet, lorsqu’il en est ainsi, on peut trouver une suite croissante d’entiers ni tels que les nombres p„. correspondants soient tous supérieurs à un nombre fixe m diffé rent de zéro, s étant arbitrairement choisi positif, le nombre | p„.cosni(x — a„.) | surpasse s, sauf pour des valeurs de x qui forment, pour o << x -< 271, un ensemble de mesure au plus égale à 7) = 4 arc sin-^? et nous devons en conclure (n° 9) que la mesure de l’ensemble des points de convergence est au plus r,. Notre théorème est ainsi démontré, car t\ tend vers zéro avec s. Ce théorème, que Riemann semble avoir considéré comme évi dent, a été démontré pour la première fois par M. G. Cantor ( ' ).
