177 FORESTRY AERIAL PHOTO-INTERPRETATION AND RE SOURCE INVENTORIES IN INDIA K.P„ Tiwari Indian Photo-interpretation Institute, Dehra Dun ABSTRACT The use of panchromatic vertical air photos for various purposes related to forest resource evaluation in India has been described,, The main emphasis has been on the evolution of suitable methods for carry ing out forest inventories, working out sampling designs and optimization of air photo-scales suited to conditions obtaining in India, Species identification, forest type delineation, area determination, tree height and crown diameter measurements, crown closure estimations have been tried successfully. Direct determination of volume on aerial photographs, tree aerial volume table for teak (Tectona grandis) and stand aerial volume tables for mixed dry deciduous forests have been prepared. These and other attempts to evolve a suitable classification for Forestry Photo interpretation for forest type delineation, quantification of volume data by cluster sampling and limitations as well as suggestions for future work are discussed. ABSTRAIT L'usage des photos aériennes verticales panchromatiques pour des buts différents concernant l'évaluation des ressources forestières de l'Inde a été décrit. L'ertphase principale a été sur l'évolution de méthodes convenables pour conduire les inventaires en forêt, établissant des modèles d'échantillonnage et l'optimisation des échelles de photos aériennes propres aux conditions de l'Inde. L'identification des espèces, la délinéation du genre de forêt, la détermination de la superficie, le mesurage de la hauteur et du diamètre de la couronne ainsi que l'évaluation de la fermeture de la couronne ont été essayés avec succès, La détermination directe du volume d'après les photos aériennes, un tableau du volume aérien du teck (Tectona grandis) et des tableaux de volumes aériens des peuplements des forêts sèches de bois durs mélangés ont été préparés. Ces tentatives et encore d'autres pour obtenir une classification convenable de la photo-interprétation des forêts quant à la délinéation du genre de forêt, de la quantité des données, en utilisant des groupes d'échantillons avec limites ainsi que des suggestions concernant le travail d'avenir sont discutées.
