MAPPING SOIL AND ASSOCIATED RESOURCES IN
NORTHEASTERN CALIFORNIA USING ERTS-1
AND SUPPORTING AIRCRAFT DATA

ABSTRACT
Analysis of Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS-1) and support
ing aircraft data through manual photo interpretation was performed for part of
a multiple resource inventory in a 450,000 resource planning unit
in Northeastern California. ERTS-1 imagery at 1:250,000 scale and high altitude
color infrared photography (1:120,000 and 1:30,000 scale) were interpreted and
subsequently ground verified to produce vegetation, soil and land use maps. The
ERTS-1 imagery served as an excellent base map and was valuable for monitoring
changes in vegetative development, snow cover, and water availability. High
altitude, small scale (1:120,000) CIR photography proved to be of value for
general vegetation mapping with the medium scale (1:30,000) CIR photography most
valuable for mapping important soil-plant communities. For large wildland areas
the use of satellite imagery, supporting aircraft data and ground data collection
prove to be useful in making cost efficient, accurate, and timely resource
inventories.
