Dans ce cas, la somme maximale est (6-1) x 5 = 25. On peut donc 
évaluer le contraste en pourcentage. 
Le contraste entre les unités A (un karst) et D (une vallée) est 
le plus fort (figure 2). 
Cas de la Pédologie , L’image satellite ne donne pas une détection 
directe des sols. Ce sont les facteurs de différenciation des sols qui ap 
paraissent le plus clairement : la végétation (forêts, cultures, prairies), 
les roches, I’hydrographie, le paysage. On peut obtenir le relief, mais 
celui-ci apparaît très écrasé, d’ailleurs, ce n’est pas le but des images 
satellites. Les relations entre les types de sol et les images sont donc 
indirectes. Mais ce n’est pas un inconvénient pour l’établissement d’une 
carte à petite échelle comme par exemple la carte pédologique au 
1/1 000 000 de la France (V). 
Ce qui est utile pour le pédologue, c'est de dessiner les diffé 
rentes lignes de contraste sur chaque canal, de les comparer, et de les 
superposer. On peut alors obtenir une carte dont les limites des sols sont 
beaucoup plus précises que celles de l’actuelle carte au 1/1 000 000. Mais 
il est difficile d’interpréter exactement les types de sol. 
On peut en faire une approche. Pour cela, on étudie les divers 
facteurs de différenciation. On en tire plusieurs hypothèses de types de 
sol. On compare les formes des surfaces sur la carte et sur l’interpréta 
tion. Par analogie, on peut retrouver quel est le type de sol qui a la 
plus forte probabilité d’existence.
