STATUS REPORT ON AUTOMATIC
CLASSIFICATION OF ERTS IMAGERY OF CANADA
David Goodenough, Joseph MacDowall
& Robert A. Ryerson
Canada Centre for Remote Sensing
Department of Energy, Mines and Resources
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
ABSTRACT
This paper describes some of the results obtained by
government, university, and industrial investigators in develop
ing methodology and applications for automatic classification
of ERTS imagery of Canada. The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing
(CCRS) receives 80 frames or 1.5 x 10l0 bits of multispectral
scanner data per day. Complete ERTS coverage of Canada is
obtained every eighteen days. This imagery is particularly
beneficial to Canada if it can be rapidly and quantitatively
analyzed with the final output being maps showing the distribu
tion of various land-use classes and/or tables listing the
acreages of each class. The quantity of data has necessitated
the development of various methods to automatically classify the
imagery in order to generate the greatest benefits.
University investigators in Canada have concentrated
upon software programs for supervised and unsupervised classifica
tions. Government and industrial work has also included the
development of man-machine interactive systems for image analysis.
Descriptions of the different approaches to automated classifica
tion are presented.
