ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Nordische Erdeichhoernchen ( Thomomys talpoides , Richardson) sind kleine wuehlende Saeugetiere die vor allem zwischen den Laengengraden 98° und 120° West und den Breitengraden 36° und 52° Nord in Nordamerika Vorkommen. Innerhalb dieses Verbreitungsgebietes bewohnt diese Art vor allem montane und subalpine Weidegebiete und Wiesen. Im noerdlichen Verbreitungsgebiet trifft man sie auch in Tieflagen an. Wenn die Populationsdichte dieser Tiere hoch ist vor allem in Regionen mit hoher Insensitaet mehrfacher Bewirtschaftung, schaedliche Wirkungen koennen als Folge von Bodenschaedigung und Futterverbrauch entstehen, und die Einsehraenkung der Populationsentwicklung kann noetig werden. Grossmasstaebliche (1:600 und 1:1200), Normal- und Infrarot-Farbluft- photos wurden fuer ausgelesene Standorte in Colorado, U.S.A. hergestellt, um festzustellen, ob dieses Fernerkundungssystem anwendbar sei fuer die Schaetzung der Populationen von nordischen Erdeichhoernchen. Erdhaufen, die durch diese Tiere im Spaetsommer angelegt werden und mit der Populationsdichte gut korreliert sind, wurden mit Hilfe der Luftphotos interpretiert. Es wurde festgestellt, dass die Populationsschaetzungen mit Hilfe der Luftphotos 97% der Genauigkeit der terrestrischen Aufnahmen aufwiesen. Die Infrarot-Farbaufnahmen im Masstab 1:600 waren am nuetzlichsten. Die Art der Vegetation, relativ hoch oder niedrig, hatte offenbar keinen Einfluss (P = .05) auf die Faehigkeit der Photointerpretatoren, die abgebildeten Erdhaufen zu identifizieren. Die Unterschiede innerhalb der Interpretatoren (P = .05) war zu vernachlaessigen.
