- not to limit the action of working groups to a rather boring administrative job^ to deal with one or two items of particular interest, with more time available than it is possible in a large quadrennial congress. By the way, let me add that Prof. Gottfried Konecny, the 1980 Congress Director^will explain you later on, how it will be possible for each Commission to have much more time at its disposal than it has in official sessions, thanks to poster sessions. The leadership of Commission VI was given to Poland by a vote of the General Assembly in Helsinki, two years ago. The more of you remember that our Polish Member Body chaired Commission VI for the period 1972-1976 and even earlier. Unfortunately, its President, Prof. Stompke, died in 1974. Later on, Prof. Sitek was appointed as the chairman of Commission VI and the good work he then carried on, together with Dr. Jachimski, in a short time preceeding the 1976 Congress, lead the General Assembly to entrust Poland again with the charge of the Commission. As it is for the other technical commissions, since a rather •recent time, the Council insisted to obtain that, whatever the Member Body in charge of a technical commission is, the chairmanship of a part of the working groups be given to colleagues from other couniries. So, the scientific activity of the commissions is extended to a much larger number of Countries than seven. One of the main goals the present ISP Council has to reach is to reinforce the links that have existed from long (well before the creation of the ISP Commission VII the 19t>2 Congress, in Washington) between photogrammetry and photo-interpretation, quite' naturally extended to remote sensing, later on. Obviously, that is the common interest of both these applied sciences. Commission VII, meeting in Freiburg, West Germany, in the early days of July, which is completely devoted to remote sensing, and Commission III, last week in Moscow, adopted a resolution inviting the ISP Council to propose the 1980 General Assembly that the name of the Society be turned to "Inter national Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing" and urging the Technical Commissions other than VII to increase the part of remote sensing in their activities. Secretary General Frederick Doyle will explain it to you better than I do and ask your vote to support the Council’s action before the present symposium closes. 190
