SECTION I. GENERAL DISCUSSION
SCOPE.
This paper, entitled 'Automatic, Analytic, and Allied Photogrammetric
Equipment, " is to be considered as a supplement to the one entitled ’Analog
Photogrammetric Equipment" as well as the one entitled "Automation in Photo
interpretation. " Its purpose is to indicate the progress made in the last four
years; to call attention to newly developed equipment; to discuss the trends
evolving in the fields of automatic, analytic, and allied photogrammetric equip
ment; and to set the stage for discussions by experts regarding this matter.
DEFINITIONS.
Automation as used herein is the automatically controlled operation of a
system, process, or apparatus by devices (mechanical or electronic) that re
place the human organs of effort, observation, and/or decisions. Automatic or
semi-automatic equipment to be covered are those which utilize complete or
partial automation of their basic photogrammetric function. Included are those
classified as monoscopic and stereoscopic comparators; those having aerial
triangulation and/or compilation capabilities; and those of a universal nature
having aerial triangulation, compilation, and/or orthophoto capabilities with
possible additional capabilities of drop-line (point) profiling and/or digital co
ordinate point recording.
Analytic equipment as used herein include those that have characteristics
similar to the photogrammetric equipment referred to above, but which are
"computer-aided. " Under such circumstances a computer may be utilized as a
separate entity; a computer may be interfaced (that is, used "on-line") with
the photogrammetric equipment; or a computer may be utilized on a remote
access ("time-sharing") basis.
Analog equipment as used herein include those which utilize mechanical
and/or optical trains to carry out basic photogrammetric functions of projection,
observing of images (or model), and measuring of coordinates (or plotting of the
model). Not included in this category are those that incorporate partial or com
plete automation of the observation process, as well as those that incorporate
the automation of the recording and processing of data derived from photogram
metric observations.
Allied equipment as used herein include those related by common prop
erties or similar characteristics. Included are automatic point-pricking
devices, image enhancers, automatic coordinate readers or recorders, image
correlation devices, and other auxiliary instruments.
