photo interpretation research in the United States is done under con- 
tract to government agencies and not published in the usual way in 
books and journals. 
a) "US Government Research Reports". They appear since 1926. According 
to an official announcement, “this publication is issued ... to announce 
new reports of research and development released by the Army, Navy, Air 
Force, Atomic Energy Commission, and other agencies of the Federal Go- 
vernment." 
b) "Technical Translations", appearing since 1954. This journal "is pu- 
blished in cooperation with the Special Libraries Association Transla- 
tions Center to list translated technical literature available from the 
Office of Technical Services, the Library of Congress, the Special Li- 
braries Association, European Translations Center, other cooperating 
foreign governments, commercial translators, publishers, universities, 
and other sources. The Special Libraries Association is responsible for 
collecting translations from non-Government sources, both domestic and 
foreign: the Office of Technical Services for collecting translations 
from both US and foreign government sources since 1940." 
Both publications appear twice a month. 
Of a more limited or national rather than international importance 
are the following documentation services: 
a) The Institute for Applied Geodesy ("Institut für Angewandte Geodä- 
sie" .= IFAG), Frankfurt a/M, Germany, established a national geodetic 
documentation service in 1962, called "IFAG Dokumentationsdienst". 
Based on a network of correspondants, library cards of the DIN A6 size 
(10.5 om by 14.6 cm) with abstracts of articles in journals, reports, 
dissertations, etc. from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Nether- 
lands. The titles are classified according to the Universal Decimal 
system. So far a total of about 4700 cards, including some 70 referen- 
ces on photo interpretation, has been published. Issues of 64 cards on 
an average appear at irregular intervals. There is also cooperation 
with the ITO, Delft. 
b) In the."Zeitschrift {ir Vermessungswesen" (journal of the "Deutsche 
Verein für Vermessungswesen"), Verlag Konrad Wittwer, Stuttgart, Ger- 
many, a literature list compiled by W.Hofmann and collaborators appears 
each year under the title "Uebersicht der Literatur für Vermessungswe- 
sen und Kulturtechnik des Jahres .... mit einzelnen Naechtr&àgen aus frü- 
heren Jahren." This list does not contain a special section on photo 
interpretation, but respective references may appear under the headings
