THE INFLUENCE OF DATA PROCESSING ON
PHOTOGRAMMETRIC INSTRUMENTS

Introduction
The purpose of this paper is to summarize progress of general
purpose data processing where it directly relates current develop-
ment of equipment allied to photogrammetric instrumentation.
Review
Digital data processing techniques have been allied with
photogrammetric instrumentation for almost 20 years. The earliest
work I can recall was the use of unit record equipment for digital
ray tracing in the design of aerial camera and other lenses in
the late 1940's and early 50's. The initial work on automatic
Stereomapping began shortly thereafter. Mr. W. C. Cude summarized
this work, starting in 1950 and proceeding up to 1962, 710 In
the latter year, he reported three developmental approaches to
automatic mapping -- the Stereomat, an analog approach; the
Unimace, a hybrid digital control approach; and, the DAMC, a
general purpose digital computer approach. A continuation of
the general-purpose approach has been continued at IBM
Kingston. A1» Arb, Ar]
