A total of 603,000 square miles (1,600,000 km 2 ) were photographed from
1948 to 1951. Of this 512,000 square miles (1,330,000 km 2 ) were photographed
at scales of 1:50,000 to 1:30,000 on behalf of the Commonwealth Government for
topographic purposes. The remaining 91,000 square miles (235,000 km 2 ) were
photographed on behalf of the state governments, as follows. For topography,
engineering, and surveys for national resources 50,500 square miles (130,000 km 2 )
were covered at scales from 1:16,000 to 1:32,000. For water conservation
12,400 square miles (32,000 km 2 ) were photographed at from 1:6,000 to 1:24,000.
For forestry 6,100 square miles (16,000 km 2 ) were photographed at 1:32,000, and
5,300 square miles (14,000 km 2 ) at 1:16,000. Cadastral requirements were 6,250
square miles (16,000 km 2 ) at 1:30,000 and 1,100 square miles (2,800 km 2 ) at
from 1:11,000 to 1:16,000. For engineering 7,150 square miles (18,000 km 2 )
were covered at from 1:5,000 to 1:24,000. Soil conservation photography cov
ered 2,000 square miles (5,200 km 2 ) at 1:16,000 and 400 square miles (1,040 km 2 )
at 1:30,000. 100 square miles (260 km 2 ) were photographed at 1:6,000 for power
transmission work.
Cameras used were the Fairchild 6" K17, the Williamson 6" Ordnance
Survey Camera, and the Williamson 6" Eagle IX, all film cameras with 9" x 9"
format.

4,200 km 2 (1,600 square miles') were photographed for topography at a
scale of 1:27,000 using the 21 cm and 11-5 cm Wild RC-5 film camera with 18 x 18
cm format. An additional 33 km 2 (13 square miles) were photographed for
cadastral survey at a scale of 1:7,600 using the 17 cm Wild RC-7 plate camera
with 14 x 14 cm format,
Canada
A total area of 3,290,000 square miles (8,500,000 km 2 ) has been photographed
from 1948 to 1951.
1,660,000 square miles (4,300,000 km 2 ) were photographed at a scale of
1:40,000 for air navigation charting. This was done with 6" K17B cameras
and 6" Fairchild ‘Cartographic’ F224 cameras in tri-camera mounts. The Can
adian modification of the K17B has an 8!" x 8|" format. The F224 has the
full 9" x 9" picture.
For topographic mapping 1,130,000 square miles (2,900,000 km 2 ) were
covered. Of this 540,000 square miles (1,400,000 km 2 ) were photographed at a
scale of about 1:36,000 using the 6" Ordnance Survey Camera. The 6" F224
was used to cover 135,000 square miles (350,000 km 2 ) at a scale of 1:63,000.
62,000 square miles (160,000 km 2 ) were photographed at a scale of 1:16,000
for agricultural assessment; 35,000 square miles (91,000 km 2 ) were covered at
1:30,000 to 1:40,000 with the KGB camera. The 6" Williamson Eagle IX
and the 6" Ordnance Survey Camera also photographed 15,000 square miles
(39,000 km 2 ) at various scales from 1:10,000 to 1:40,000. The 3|-" Williamson
Eagle V camera with a 5" x 5" format was used by the province of British
Columbia for topography with 100,000 square miles (260,000 km 2 ) photographed
at a scale of 1:54,000, 1,000 square miles (2,600 km 2 ) photographed at a scale of
