scopic influence in the measurement may be quite different. How the curve is
approaching the origin is also of essential importance, but unfortunately, this
determination is a very complicated task. And, last but not least, it is not the
curve itself that gives the influence but the combined effect of the distortion of
the two pictures in question. This effect is not easy to estimate from the curve
directly.
Sometimes, if the lens distortion curve is favourable as to its stereoscopic
effect it would be advisable to execute aerotriangulations without any compen
sation. Depending upon the imperfection of the compensating means, this way
will give a better result. The scheme is used with success in practice.
Also it must be made clear where to place the stereoscopic setting of the
measuring mark if vertical parallaxes are obvious. Made in one way the setting
will result in a displacement of the point to be measured, in another way it will
give no displacements. The descriptive geometry gives the answer in a simple
way.
Aufschluss.
R. W. Fish: Notes on calibration of cameras.
The basic concepts of camera calibration are reviewed and the definitions of
camera parameters in the proposed International Standard are discussed. A
method of reduction of measured values obtained during calibration is described
and the importance of setting the central fiducial mark of the camera, to the
centre of symmetry of the lens, is emphasized. The distance between the centre
of symmetry and the principal point of auto-collimation is shown to be a measure
of the tangential distortion. Proposals for modifications and additions to the
draft International Standard are made.

Geographical Survey Office, Sweden: Empirical determination
of the distortion of air cameras.
The real distortion of an air camera in practical use on varying altitudes is
an important factor which is difficult to determine. The Geographical Survey
Office of Sweden has made some tests with an empirical method. Air photo
graphs have been taken over large lakes in the spring when the ice surface is
detailed and absolutely plane. From the height errors in a stereomodel a distor
tion curve has been computed. This empirical curve differed remarkably from
the laboratory curve which contents only the optical distortion. A great part
of the total distortion proved to come from errors in the flatness of the pressure
plate. A check of the flatness of the pressure plate gave errors up to 0.07 mm.
