The lens distortion was then checked with photographic method in collaboration
with The Optic Laboratory of The Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.
The distortion effect of the earth curvature, of refraction and of the errors in
the pressure plate was computed. A superimposing of these curves on the optical
distortion curve gave a total distortion curve which proved to correspond to the
empirical curve attained from the ice pictures.

L. Ottoson: Comparative tests of the accuracy of panchromatic, infrared and
color pictures from the air for photogrammetric purposes.
The same area has been photographed from the air in panchromatic, infrared
and color pictures. For the comparative test of the geometric qualities of the
pictures the y-parallax method has been used. The pictures were oriented in
the autograph A7 and the y-parallaxes were measured along the fundamental
circles and in the ordinary 9 orientation points. Then the relative orientation
was numerically adjusted and the residual y-parallaxes in all measured points
were numerically computed. The radial distortion curves were determined as
an average of the 4 possible determinations. Finally the mean square values of
the residual y-parallaxes and of the deviations from the average of the distortion
amounts were computed for each point of the distortion curve. The results of
these computations were used as an indication of the geometrical quality of the
pictures.
The results are quite interesting and prove that the color pictures are well
suited for measuring purposes.
Discussion Le Président ouvre ensuite la discussion. Le Prof. Hallert répond à une
question de Mr. G. C. Tewinkel (Etats-Unis).
Prof. B. Hallert: I will answer Mr. Tewinkel’s question: »Why not a star test-
plate?» When taking a photograph of stars, you have the influence of the entire
atmosphere. When taking an aerial photograph of the ground, you have just the
atmosphere below. Of course, you can correct for the refraction according to
formulas, but you never know whether these formulas really work.
I would like to say that we have many more determinations of the distortion
from the air particularly with the grid method.
Furthermore, I want to emphasize a little about the paper by Mr. Ottoson on
the y-parallax method, which gave a very clear information that color pictures,
