infra-red pictures and panchromatic pictures have about the same geometrical
accuracy. I think this y-parallax method to determine accuracy conditions is
very good and particularly in cases when methods and instruments are com
pared.
Mr. J. Cruset on the comment from Mr. Tewinkel concerning the possible use of a night-sky
photograph, draws attention to the difference in air refraction, between a night-photograph of
stars, and an aerial photograph taken during the day, especially with good weather.
Hallert répond: »We have not done that yet; what we have done up to now has
been to test the formulas and the procedure only. I can tell you that this sum
mer, we have in cooperation with the Swedish Air Force, photographed our
area. Simultaneously, we registered with balloons and radio the temperature, the
humidity and other things of the atmosphere that might be of interest. We
operated from different altitudes and hope, after a series of such measurements
and photographs, to be able to find whether there is a correlation between the fac
tors we have determined concerning the meteorological statements and the distor
tion. Otherwise I cannot say anything about it. If we look at these curves here,
particularly those American curves, we have the impression from the results that
the refraction might have in that case some responsibility for the changes,
but I do not want to say anything about it yet: it is too early to speak about it.
Dr. A. M. Wassef: The method which Prof. Hallert described is in a certain
sense similar to the grid method which I proposed in 1953 in connection with the
calibration of multiplex projectors. Prof. Hallert has shown that the lens can be
represented by one point. I assume that the lens, the thick lens in any case,
which is symmetrical around an axis and free from distortion can be represented
by two points. I wonder whether Prof. Hallert would think it worthwhile to
introduce the two points instead of a single point to represent the thick lens.
Prof. B. Hallert: I think that the problem can be entirely avoided if you take
two pictures with translation in the same way as the inner orientation of the
plotting instrument normally is determined.
