Apparatus for projective and affine transformations
An apparatus for the projective and affine transformation of figures has been
developed. It is based on a combination of static and dynamic integrating photo
graphy. All transformations are made in a one-step operation. The setting of the
instrument has not to be calculated but the values will be determined and auto
matically set within a few minutes by observing and measuring on the ground
glass. The range of reproduction is limited to 1: 1 + 3 % with a maximum size
of 32"X40".
The most important field of application of this apparatus is general carto
graphy. Lengthening and shrinking of the base of drawings will be compensated
by an exact projective reproduction, the remaining failures being negligible.
Therefore plastic foils or other bases lacking absolute accuracy to size can be
used without difficulties for the drawing of maps.
Furthermore this instrument is applicable for rectifications of air photographs
if the ground plane (respectively the plane of minor control points) represents
an affine image of the map plane due to differences in height. In this case the
projective reproduction including affine components will deliver a much more
precise rectification than a normal single photograph rectification.
Whether transformations of trigonometrical and traversing nets can be made
with this new apparatus remains the object of further tests. In this respect addi
tionally to the accuracy of the apparatus the efficiency of the photographical
material would be of highest importance.
The apparatus in question is the KLIMSCH VARIOGRAPH (Registered
Trade Mark). It has been developed and manufactured by Messrs. Klimsch &
Co., Frankfurt/M., Germany. The first apparatus has been sold to Bundesamt
fiir Eich- und Vermessungswesen (Federal Department of Standards and Sur
veying) of Austria, Vienna.
