struction type of structures, interpretation of transportation features and urban 
areas, identification of horizons, etc. Consideration is given to the importance 
of background study of a geographic and economic nature and the development 
of more photo-interpretation keys, both of which are of proven value to the 
cartographer in his photo-analysis. 
Further, the photograph is a useful tool in the actual design of aeronautical 
charts; it gives one a better idea of the appearance of ground features as the 
user of the chart might find them. Thus, the cartographer can prescribe more 
realistic symbols of portrayal, and can sort out the most important features to 
be shown. The paper also discusses the identification of features from their gross 
characteristics rather than from recognition by their component elements. 
Air Force charting is greatly dependent on the aerial photograph. We are not 
satisfied that we have exhausted the potential that photo-interpretation can 
provide, and we are continuing to study its applications. 
Die Rolle der Luftbild-Auswertung in Luftwaffen Kartierung 
Der heutige Vereinigten Staaten Luftwaffen Kartenzeichner gebraucht viele Techniken der Luft 
bild-Auswertung für die Herstellung der Fliegerkarten. Diese Abhandlung erklärt seinen allgemeinen 
Bedarf für Photographie und zeigt einige Aufgaben, die er erfüllt durch seine Kenntnis in der 
Luftbild-Auswertung. 
Im allgemeinen, die Luftwaffen Photographie sollte den äussersten Geländeausschnitt jeder Auf 
nahme bestimmen und trotzdem noch die nötige Detailerkennbarkeit behalten für den Bedarf der 
Kartierung. Obwohl etwas von den abgebildeten Einzelheiten aufgegeben werden muss, genug sollte 
für den Kartenzeichner beibehalten werden, um die Entscheidung durch Auswertung zu verschaffen. 
Die Hauptsache für die Luftwaffen Kartierung, was die Aufgabe unseres Kartenzeichners betrifft, 
ist die Erreichung dieser minimum Detailerkennbarkeit. 
Der einzigartige Bedarf der Fliegerkartierung erfordert viele ungewohnte Luftbild-Auswertungs 
probleme. Einige von den Aufgaben sind hier auserwählt für Erörterung; Auswertung der allge 
meinen Flächendarstellung, Luftbild-Festpunkt-Erwählung und Skizzierung der Detailerkennbarkeit 
an Schrägaufnahmen, Auswertung der Verkehrsmittel und Stadtlandschaft-Merkmäle, Bestimmung 
der Höhe und Struktur-Grundform, und Horizont Identifizierung. Der Wert der Hintergrund 
Untersuchung und die Entwicklung des Luftbild-Auswertungsschlüssel ist auch besprochen. 
Die Fliegerkarte ist entworfen um die Bedürfnisse des Gebrauchers am besten zu befriedigen und 
die Photographie ist ein wertvolles Werkzeug in der Bearbeitung der Entwertung und Detailerkenn 
barkeit-Auswahl. Die Merkmäle sind identifiziert durch die Grosscharakteristiks und es ist be 
sprochen, wie es den Kartenentwurf und die Vervollständigung betrifft. 
Luftwaffen Kartierung ist sehr viel abhängig von der Luftbildaufnahme. Wir haben die Möglich 
keit noch nicht vollkommen ausgenutzt, welche Photo-Auswertung festsetzen kann, und wir studieren 
noch weiter ihre Anwendungen.

Interpretation anti the Social Structure of the City: 
This summary paper discusses the rationale, procedures and findings of the 
author’s investigations concerning applications of aerial photographic interpreta 
tion as a methodological innovation in urban sociology. There is considerable 
evidence that this relatively new medium of study may contribute to the collec 
tion of data needed for an adequate understanding of patterns of world urbani 
zation and the development of a systematic theory of cities. 
The concept of the so-called »urban socio-physical nexus» provides the under 
lying hypothesis indicating the feasibility of interpreting social data from 
aerial photographs. This position recognizes that urban social systems exist in a 
physical environment and that they are housed in and characterized by material- 
cultural features which condition, limit and facilitate social interaction. Further, 
it is assumed that such multiple interrelationships between the physical and 
social organization of the city exist in varying form from region to region and 
culture to culture. 
Accordingly, certain physical data categories obtainable by aerial photographic 
interpretation should be meaningful for social science research. The present
