GENERAL ASSEMBLY - OPENING SESSION

Assemblée Générale — Séance d’ouverture 
The President of the International Society for Photogrammetry, Patrilc Mo- 
gensen, declared the First Meeting of the General Assembly open, and immedi 
ately gave the floor to the President of the Swedish Society of Photogrammetry, Lundgren 
Mr. B. Lundgren, Director in Chief of the Geographical Survey Office.

la première séance de l’Assemblée Générale, et donne la parole immédiatement au Président de la 
Société Suédoise de Photogrammétrie, M. B. Lundgren, Directeur en chef de la Direction Générale 
du Service Cartographique. 
Mr. President, Your Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen. 
The Swedish Society of Photogrammetry extends to all of you a warm and 
hearty welcome to the capital of Sweden and the VIII. International Congress 
of Photogrammetry. 
Sweden is a small country and our resources are modest. Traditionally we 
are, however, greatly interested in following technical developments to find ef 
ficient means to further the economy of our country. This is the reason why 
in spite of our small capacity we were bold enough to accept the offer with 
which we were honoured in Washington 1952 to arrange the international con 
gress of 1956. 
Naturally, it would have been impossible for us to create the outer framework 
for this congress without valuable assistance from many quarters, above all the 
Swedish Government, the municipal authorities of Stockholm and a number of 
institutions, firms and private persons in the country who have helped us eco 
nomically or with unselfish work. After all, this congress has been possible 
because of the fact that practically all the photogrammétrie experts the world 
has to offer—over 600 scientists and practicians from more than 40 countries— 
have accepted our invitation to meet far up in the North. 
We feel sure you will be kind enough to show indulgence with regard to any 
shortcomings in the external arrangements of the congress and we express our 
warm hope that you may derive great benefit from the present programme as 
well as happiness and satisfaction from your contact with Stockholm and Sweden.

La Société Suédoise de Photogrammétrie vous souhaite à tous la bienvenue à la capitale de la 
Suède et au VIII Congrès International de Photogrammétrie. 
La Suède est un pays à ressources modestes: cependant nous avons la tradition de suivre avec 
intérêt l’évolution technique, en vue de promouvoir le développement économique de notre pays. 
C’est pour cette raison que nous nous sommes enhardis jusqu’à accepter la tâche dont nous étions 
honorés à Washington en 1952, d’organiser le congrès international de 1956. Naturellement, cela 
nous aurait été impossible sans l’assistance précieuse fournie par le gouvernement suédois, les 
autorités municipales de Stockholm, et un nombre d’institutions, de compagnies et de particuliers 
qui nous ont aidés financièrement ou par leur travail désintéressé. En fin de compte, ce congrès 
a été rendu possible à cause du fait que presque tous les experts en photogrammétrie du monde 
entier — plus de 600 hommes de science et praticiens, de plus de 40 pays — ont accepté notre 
invitation de se réunir chez nous dans le Nord. 
Nous sommes bien convaincus que vous serez indulgents pour nous, si vous trouvez des insuffi 
sances dans les dispositions que nous avons prises. Permettez moi, enfin, d’exprimer notre espoir
