The Universities of Zurich, Berne and Lausanne in
Switzerland give separate courses for advanced students
of geology and geography. They also use photographs
extensively in research and advanced studies of special
problems, as well as in field mapping. Their equipment
comp rises mirror stereoscopes and parallax bars.
The geological and geographical departments of the
University of Basle, Switzerland do not give courses
specially den ted to photo interpretation. They teach
the method as may be required in their general practical
training and use it in advanced research and field mapping.
All these Swiss institutions possess collections of
specially suited photographs. Moreover they can either
buy or hire on exceedingly favorable terms photographs
from the archives of the Federal Topographical and
Cadastral Surveys. All these photographs are governed
by the requirements of photo gramme trie surveying. The
air transport company "Swissair” possesses a collection
of about 20,000 photos of Switzerland, mostly obliques,
which are also available. They were not taken for
surveying purposes and are, in general, not suitable
for stereoscopic examination.
The extensive training courses given at the International
Training Center for Aerial Survey, Delft, the Netherlands,
were covered in the 1952 Commission VII report.
