PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF THEN UMERICAL ADJUST-
MENT OF THE RELATIVE ORIENTATION
By
Stig Thorén, Stockholm
It has been said that photogrammetry is the art of measuring without
computing. This elegant description has to some extent been invalidated
through the demands for great accuracy which in many cases is obtained
at the lowest cost by means of adjustment computations.
In the field of relative orientation Hallert has in [1] 1. a. given for-
mulas for the computation of corrections to the elements of orientation
by means of residual parallaxes measured at 6 points. The same author
has later in [2] i. a. dealt further with this problem and increased the
investigations so that they comprised 9 points. The examples show that
not inconsiderable improvements in the relative orientation can be ob-
tained, but even so the methods do not seem to have been as widely used
as they deserve. The probable reason is that the formulas contain many
terms. It should, however, be possible to simplify the calculation e. g. by
means of computation form.
The author has therefore designed such form, at first both for 6 and
2 points. It soon appeared that much better results were obtained with
the 9-point formulas, which have since been used exclusively.
The formulas given in [2] are valid for Zeiss Stercoplanigraph mo-
del C 5, with a definition of P, = Y2 — y,. The formulas have been
adjusted to be valid for Wild A 7 with P, 7 yi — ya. The corrections
are valid for base in. A simplified version of the formulas will then
read as follows.
