Coverage from additional geographic areas of the United States and from
several areas outside of the United States will probably be deposited in the
repository prior to September 1960,
In addition to aerial negatives, a series of prepared stereograms illus-
trating specific cultural, terrain, and vegetative features is being assembled
within the repository. Prints from all negatives in the repository will be
supplied to anyone requesting them. The other services of the Committee on
Aerial Photography are performed in direct support of the activities of the
University of Illinois, but many of these services have been made available to
agencies of the State of Illinois and to other colleges and universities.
Detailed information on the cost of prints and other services, on services
performed for eligible agencies, and on delivery schedules is available and
will be supplied on request to the Secretary of the Committee.
The Air Photo Repository has received more publicity than any other phase
of the University of Illinois aerial photography program, but it is only a
minor part of a more inclusive effort. Active teaching programs dealing with
photogrammetry and photographic interpretation are maintained by the depart-
ments of Agronomy, Agricultural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Forestry,
Geography, and Geology. As might be expected, these courses draw many
students from other disciplines, thereby extending the aerial photography
program into such fields as archeology, agricultural economics, city planning,
ecology, wildlife management, and zoology.
As directed in their original charge, the Committee on Aerial Photography
is actively promoting research programs related to the use of aerial photog-
raphy. The best indication of the scope of the research program being under-
taken can be found in the list of departments which are interested. The
departments of Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Engineering, Agronomy,
Architecture, Botany, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering;
Forestry, Geography, Geology, Landscape Architecture and City Planning,
Mechanical Engineering, Plant Pathology, Psychology, Sociology and Anthropol-
ogy, and Zoology have all agreed to cooperate in those phases of the over-all
program which are pertinent to their subject-matter fields. The Agricultural
Experiment Station, the Engineering Experiment Station, and the Institute of
Aviation have also agreed to cooperate in this programs
It is expected that this research program will generate research projects
in the following specific areas:
l. Investigations of spectral reflectance properties of objects to be
photographed.
2. Investigations of photo-chemical processes involved in the produc-
tion of photographs including investigations of grainless
registration media.
3. Investigations of the human factors involved in photographic
interpretation,
4, Investigations of the application and design of automatic data
processing systems for high-speed photographic interpretation.
