5-7 Commission VII
5-7-1 Remote Sensing
During period from XIth: Congress in Lausanne to this XII th: in Ottawa,
activities of the VII Commission have been turned largely to remote sensing,
particularily taking oppotunity that UN distributed the documents on the participa-
tion in space flight investigation "ERTS data investigation, Jun. 2, 1970.
In Dec. 1970, the Research Coordination Division of the Science and T echnology
Agency has organized a Commission for Studies of the Earth Resources Technology
Satellite Data with membership of experts from various scientific disciplines
related.
On the other hand, multi-spetral photographs application experiments for
environment quality have been started by several organizations, the Resources
Survey Institute of the Science and Technology Agency, the Forestry Experiment
Station, Weather Observatory Bureau, Tokyo Metropolitan and Private Companies
in 1970. These experiments have been set up for the purpose of evaluation of urban
environment disruption by air pollution which has become serious problem in the
Tokyo Metropolis currently.
Prior to above, since 1965, The Geological Survey of Japan has conducted its
IR remote sensing and related research works aimed to geothermal resources
exploration purposes. These works have stimulated various investigations on
thermal IR applications for environmental purposes and become one of the crue
to joint investigation of both side, sensor development and application studies.
For instance the 10th summer seminer sponsored by the Society of Applied
Geophisics in Aug. 1971 and meeting of the Society of IR Technology Investigation
