COMMISSION V. SPECIAL APPLICATIONS OF PHOTOGRAMMETRY

Research work is being done at Natal University in the aerial photography
of a number of archaological sites using pan and infra-red film, also
early morning obliques fo improve interpretation.
Two test areas for terrestrial photography have been set out for calibrat-
ion purposes in conjunction with the stereocomparator. Some | : | scale
drawings of rock engravings have been produced from terrestrial stereo-
photography, also large scale architectural drawings of the elevations of
historical buildings.
One private company is undertaking research using terrestrial photography
to determine volumes in open cast mines and also tunnel measurements for
+he South African Railways using Zeiss Short Base camera equipment.

The Universities of Cape Town, Natal, Pretoria and Witwatersrand offer
courses in photogrammetry at both graduate and post-graduate levels in
land surveying, civil engineering and allied disciplines. In South
Africa photogrammetry is regarded as a surveying technique and therefore
an integral part of the surveying profession, hence There is no separate
degree course in this subject. Courses at technician level are provided
by the College of Advanced Technical Education, Durban, Pretoria and Cape
Town. Commercial air survey companies also run Training courses for
photogrammetric operators on their own premises.
