A considerable amount of applied research has been carried out with 
infra-red linescan and sidescan radar which has subsequently led to a number 
of effective production surveys using these new techniques. Research was 
also carried out into all the best known processes of orthophoto production:

Equipment available for photogrammetric work consists of one Wild A8 
plotter with EK5 attachment and Profiliscope, one Wild B8 plotter and two sets 
of Williamson mark I multiplex equipment. Williamson F49 mark II cameras 
have now been fitted to four helicopters working from survey ships. 
Processing of films will be carried out using Zeiss processing equipment for 
immediate use on board ship. Preliminary photographic plots can then be done 
in the field with simple instruments leaving more detailed analysis to be carried 
out in the office. These helicopters have made it possible to obtain survey 
photography of remote islands, such as St Helena, from survey ships on 
passage. Owing to their slow speed they are also ideal aircraft for tidal 
current work.

The firm's range of aerial films (89) (FP3 Aerial, HP3 Aerial and Aerial A) 
are now used almost exclusively on a Melinex polyester base, rather than the 
shrink-resistant acetate base, for mapping. This major swing in preference of 
the newer base has occurred during the past four years. 
Although originally introduced as a high resolution film for medium and 
large scale photography, FP3 aerial film has been increasingly used recently 
for very small scale photography at 1:80 000. For this application the film is 
processed to a contrast of G 1.0 to 1.2. This is the average contrast over a 
log exposure range of 1.0, measured from a density of 0.4 above fog. 
HP3 Aerial film continues to be widely used as the standard material for 
mapping in the UK while some increase has been found in the use of Aerial A for 
photography during hazy weather. There has been a move to the more general 
use of film diapositive materials on 0. 007 inch polyester base, though glass 
diapositives are still used in large quantities for very accurate work. Ilford Ltd 
is now the only remaining British manufacturer of photographic emulsions 
supported on glass plates.
