SECTION 5
EDUCATION
In addition to the well established courses at University College London,
and the universities of Newcastle upon Tyne and Glasgow which deal with
photogrammetry exclusively (or to a considerable extent), BSc degree in land
surveying science may now be obtained at NE London Polytechnic (formerly
Waltham Forest Technical College). This course, which is of three years
duration deals extensively with photogrammetry. The degree is that of the
Council for National Academic Awards (CNAA). Establishments which offer
specialised undergraduate and post graduate courses with a considerable
photogrammetric content will be indicated with an asterisk *,
During the period under review steps have also been taken to establish
courses in a number of polytechnics, technical colleges and colleges of
further education for the Ordinary National Certificate (ONC) in surveying,
cartography and planning (which includes photogrammetry) and the Higher
National Certificate (HNC) in photogrammetry (88).
ABERDEEN UNIVERSITY, Dept. of Geography
Courses on photo interpretation include an element of fairly simple
photogrammetric procedures. A short course of 10 hours is also given to
civil engineering students designed mainly to make them aware of the uses of
photogrammetry in their professional field. More advanced photogrammetry is
not taught.
ABERYSTWYTH. UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF WALES, Dept.of Geography
The department offers an optional course in photogrammetry at final year
level of approximately 60 hours.
BELFAST, QUEEN'S UNIVERSITY, Dept, of Civil Engineering
The surveying course taken by civil engineers includes photogrammetry.
Equipment available includes parallax bar, stereoscope and radial line
plotter.
BELFAST. QUEEN'S UNIVERSITY. Dept. of Geography
Undergraduates receive basic training in air photo interpretation. Research
students occasionally make use of more sophisticated photogrammetric
equipment.
BIRMINIGHAM UNIVERSITY. Dept.of Civil Engineering
In their final year, students make selections from a fairly wide choice of
options, one of which is photogrammetry. About 15-20% of final year students
select this option.
