was a strong plea to increase the opportunities for the presentation of technical papers at future sessions of 
Commission VII, and for official meetings such as the next IUFRO congress in Oslo in 1975.

The discussion which followed the Invited Papers, ** *Toros' >’ Side-Looking Radar System and Its Application 
for Sea-Ice Condition Study and for Geologic Explorations"', by V.M. Glushkov, V.B. Komarov, V.S. 
Loshtshilov, B.P. Niyarvo, V.A. Starostin, and, “Is Remote Sensing Operational?”’, by R.B. McEwen, 
concentrated on side-looking radar. Experiences with projects in many countries were exchanged, and there 
was some debate about the practical value of SLAR imagery; both sceptics and enthusiastic proponents of the 
method took part in the discussion. It was generally agreed that several years would be required for a proper 
evaluation.

N. Oprescu: *Some remarks on national and regional air photography and space programmes, 
including projects in the delta of the Danube"; 
S. Haenel, W. Perlwitz and P. Trepte: ** The determination of forest stand data using photo-interpretation and 
digitizers”. 
Friday August 4 1972, 15:45 
J. Erickson presented an Invited Paper: “Automation of Extraction of Information from Multispectral Scanner 
Data". 
The following panel discussion focussed on costs and trends in interpreting multispectral scanner data. Related 
programmes in Japan and France were described. 
Following the panel discussion, Mme C.M. Girard presented a paper: ** Aerial Photography in Agricultural 
Ecology”. 
The Commission President thanked all participants, and closed this last session of Commission VII at the XIIth
