of images. In the RBV case, particular attention is paid to the electronic distortion. The analytical formulation
based on polynomial and projective transformation is shown to be capable of providing the line modulation
control, which is essential to the precision processing system adopted for the Canadian ERTS program. The
geometry of MSS images is discussed in detail with particular respect to the distorting effect of the earth's
rotation and to attitude changes of the sensor during the flight. Furthermore, the cartographic aspects of the
ERTS imaging are taken into account. The practical implementation of the correction procedures for the
production of imagery from tape-recorded data is outlined in the technological scheme of the Canadian ERTS
data handling system.

PHOTOGRAMMETRIC PROCEDURES FOR MAP REVISION
The revision of existing map series has become a great problem not only in industrial countries disposing of
map series at different scales, but also in developing countries.
In all cases the aerial photograph, or, in particular cases, the orthophotograph, has become the indispensable
basic material of map revision. Partially, the orthophotograph is directly used as aerial photomap. The author
explains the relation existing between photoflight, photo scale, and map scale and sheetline system of the map
series. Then a general description of instruments and the specific techniques is given, which seem to be
especially suited for these works in different cases. The possibilities of the orthophotographic technique are
discussed in detail.
In addition, the author describes the necessity and the extension of local reconnaissance and supplementary
work. Then, a summary is given on the consecutive cartographic and reprotechnical work up to the revision
of map originals. In this summary, the author particularly mentions the existing possibilities of speeding up
these operations by the digitizing and automatical plotting of all map corrections.
In conclusion, the different working methods are compared, and the author gives a perspective on the future
development.

COHERENT OPTICAL TERRAIN RELIEF
DETERMINATION USING MATCHED FILTER
Coherent optical processing techniques show considerable promise for the extremely rapid extraction and
recording of terrain elevation data. A conceptual terrain elevation collection system is centered on an image
matched-filter coherent optical processor. The principle of image matched-filter correlation is discussed, and
some factors of concern in using this technique in operational equipment.

AUTOMATED AND ANALYTICAL INSTRUMENTS
Working Group 1I/3 was activated in 1969 for the purpose of exchanging ideas and experiences concerning
the automation of various components and elements of photogrammetric instruments in order to reach
conclusions regarding what possibilities exist and what operations may profit through automation.
Projects, undertaken by collaborators, and results to date are discussed. Projects include analysis of design
principles in photogrammetric automation, experimentation with an off-line orthophoto system, application
of the BAI image correlator, and digitization directly from the stereomodel.
