integral tracing table of the PLANIMAT. The scanning motion can be selected to be either continuous,
discontinuous with automatic reduction of the speed just prior to the recording, or in steps in which only the
transport from one point to the next is automatic. Extensive test measurements have shown the mean square
vertical errors to be +0.1%o to 0.15%o of the flying height during step operation, 0.15%o to 0.2%o in
discontinuous, and 0.15960 to 0.3960 in continuous operation. At faster densities of 5 m x 5 m the performance
is 1800 p/h, at 10 m x 10 m it is 1400 p/h, and at 20 m x 20 m it is 1000 p/h. When used with the Itek EC-5
Correlator, the instrument setup is capable of measuring digital terrain models automatically.

THE E-2 PLANICART - A NEW STEREOPLOTTER
Analogous plotting continues to be today one of the basic processes in photogrammetry. For the production
of maps of medium to medium-large scales and for map revision, Carl Zeiss of Oberkochen have expanded
their system of plotting instruments by adding the E-2 PLANICART Stereoplotter. This rugged, reasonably
priced instrument has been developed around some of the time-tested principles of the D-2 PLANIMAT
Precision Stereoplotter and permits plotting of photographs up to 23 cm x 23 cm (9"x 9") and taken with focal
lengths of 87, 115, 210 and 305 mm (£3 mm). With model scales of x = 460 mm, y = 700 mm and z =
f + 40 mm - F + 390 mm, the maximum magnification from photo to model is 3.5 x for ultrawide-angle and
wide-angle, 2.8 x for intermediate-angle, and 2.2 x for normal-angle photography. In these magnification
ranges, mapping is possible on the integral luminous tracing table with the operator watching the process. The
instrument has a spatial compound slide system, handwheel as well as screw drives, and freehanded guidance.
During map revision, the stereomodel and the map sheet can be traced through on the integral tracing table,
the model can be partially positioned and the changes can be mapped and cartographically implemented. For
large-scale mapping the EZ-3 external tracing table (80 cm x 120 cm, luminous top, synchro drives) can be
connected. Grid measurements on the prototype have shown the mean square errors in x to be € 11g, in y
+ 124, and in z 0.056960.

A COMPUTER-ASSISTED STEREOCOMPARATOR
The TA3/PI comparator is a computer-assisted three-stage comparator designed to measure rapidly large
numbers of pass-point coordinates and ground-control-point coordinates from medium- and high-resolution
aerial photography. A general-purpose on-line computer assists the comparator operator in maintaining
stereoscopy and in the preliminary processing of the measurements made.

TESTS FOR INSTRUMENTS FOR DIFFERENTIAL RECTIFICATION
AND FOR RELIEF REPRESENTATION
The plotting of a stereomodel is suitable for a comprehensive and quick integral checking without special tools
of the state of adjustment and the performance of instruments for differential rectification and relief
representation. It is recommended to repeat the testing of instruments in regular intervals. The instrument user
should select an air photo pair from his photographic material as a test model, and reserve it for repeated
application. The test model has to be chosen so that the calibrated focal length, image scale, scale of
rectification, etc. correspond to the usual or predominant plotting disposition.
By comparing the plotting results with earlier plottings of the same model, it is possible to recognize changes
of accuracy, resolving power, illumination, strip formation, etc.
