CHAPTER IV. MAP PRODUCTION
IV.1. Applications
The following special developments can be reported in the field of photogrammetric mapping
for the period 1972—1976.
IV.1.1. Survey Department of Rijkswaterstaat
The method of digital planimetric mapping has been further developed to such a stage that it is
now possible, with the aid of programs, to achieve such things as the parallity of lines, right
angularity of buildings, and a circle through three points. Hardware consists of a Calcomp 745
flat-bed plotter and a newly acquired Laser Display HRD 1 which is not yet operational.
IV.1.2. The Topographic Service
The Topographic Service has started with the development of a digital mapping system in which
the digitisation is done on single photographs (rectified photos or orthophotos). This system has
been chosen above that of stereoscopic digitisation based mainly on financial considerations but
the flat nature of the Netherlands has of course also played an important part in this decision.
A Wild PPO-8 orthophotoscope and a Gradicon-digitiser are the instruments for this system.
A systematic control of the topographic maps has been carried out since 1970 in which every
year, the coordinates of hundreds of points measured on the maps are compared with the
coordinates of the same points which have been included in the block adjustment for this
purpose. The result is a standard deviation of differences about 0.18 mm.
IV.1.3. The Cadastral Service
The Government of the Netherlands has decided, after some years of research and preparation,
that there will be a large scale base map of the Netherlands. The scale will be 1:2.000 or 1:1.000
depending on the area.
The first maps are expected to be ready in 1976.
IV.2. Research
The results of the O.E.E.P.E.-test "Dordrecht", about maps of built-up areas, have been evaluat-
ed by the Cadastral Service which is the "pilotcentre" for this test. The final report is almost
ready for publication.
CHAPTER V. NON-TOPOGRAPHIC APPLICATIONS OF PHOTOGRAMMETRY
Work in this field has been carried out mainly by the Survey Department of Rijkswaterstaat and De
Waal Archifoto Ltd.
The Survey Department of Rijkswaterstaat has written a report on their activities which will be
available at the Congress in the form of a presented paper and deals with:
Verification of wave-riders
Measurement of the height of ships
Verification of an altimeter in a jet-fighter
Measurement of the height and the direction of waves.
