Summary
The invention of the Analytical Plotter by HErAvA has provided practical photogrammetry with a
new aid the importance of which is constantly growing due to the development of digital techniques.
The equipment presently available ranges from the AP/C-3 by O.M.L to systems with automatic image
correlation (AS 11-BX by Bendix, Unamace by Bunker-Ramo and Gestalt by Hobrough). The effi-
ciency of an Analytical Plotter is equally determined by the hardware (core-storage capacity. periphe-
ral equipment) and the software. While the advantage of the Analytical Plotter was originallv consi-
dered to be the possibility of increased plotting accuracy due to analytical correction of systematic
image errors and while its importance for special plotting projects (military panoramic photography)
was recognized very soon, its value is presently increasing due to its particular suitability for automat-
ing photogrammetric techniques, at least on a step-by-step basis: the semi-automation of the orientation
processes, the automatic positioning of points, the use of output media susceptible to automation.
The efficiency of the Analytical Plotter will increase bv comparison with that of conventional equip-
ment if the instrument is programmed for certain specific tasks: for example. as an aerotriangulator
with semi-automatic point transfer, as a digital data-acquisition system or as a terrestrial plotter cap-
able of making allowance for special photographic and object conditions.
