A wide literature (1) is by now available to fully descri
be and illustrate the concept of "industrial photogrammetry”
as well as its multifacet applications. For more detailed in-
formation please refer to such literature.
We would like to add that we consider Photogrammetry as
an industrial application also, not only because it is used
for the survey of industrial product components, but mainly
because it should be organized to replace or to side metrolo-
gical activity in many cycles of manufacturing operations.
For instance, in the automotive field, which is presen-
tly passing through a severe crisis, the need is particularly
felt to exploit the most advanced techniques in all sectors,
including metrology, in order to achieve the maximum economy,
automation and rationalization of the manufacturing operations
performed. Besides, the need is continuously growing for stri
cter and stricter "accuracy" in the various techniques (either
repetitive or not): measuring must therefore be accurate, spe
edy and carefully checked off.
Metrology (particularly in the field of mechanical engi-
neering) has fulfilled such requirements and achieved remarka
ble progress.
The introduction of Photogrammetry in the above fields of
activity would not ingenerate any conflict inasmuch as, while
it calls for the necessary support from other metrological te
chniques, at the same time it can integrate itself with such
techniques, thus offering a wide range of possible applications.
Roughly, the respective competence can be outlined as fol
lows:
a) survey of small-size objects (less than 0.4 + 0.5 m) - whe
re tolerance allowed is as close as one micron or + 0.01 mm
- falls within the province of mechanical metrology
