Investigation of soils carried out by the RADAM- 
BRASIL Team has shown a significant diversification of their - 
potentiality due to the climatic conditions and the parent rock. 
A considerable variety of fertile soils have been 
found in the Brazilian Northeastern Region but very poor in 
water content, requiring irrigation for agricultural use. In 
the Amazon Region a reverse problem is encountered: fertility 
is the problem and not the climate. 
After the expressive amount of observations and la 
boratory investigations carried on the team feels prepared to 
state that in the Amazon Region soils are predominantly of low 
natural fertility, eventhough the physic properties are fairly
