To overcome this problem PODIUM has been developed, PODIUM
being an
acronym for Polygon-Oriented Digital Image
Utilization Management System.
More exactly,
the following fundamental design criteria
have been adopted:
1. being optimum on every level of application from simply
storing and retrieving pictorial
information up to
managing amage data bases,
2. providing optimum storage allocation and access methods
for each type of information to be handled,
3. enabling unexperienced programmers to deal with by
means of simple subroutine references,
4. its background being a concept allowing an installation
on every digital computer with direct-access storage
equipment,
5. most efficiently utilizing
installation.

Conventional digital
image
into image processing and image recognition
processing refers to operations which trans-
into other images, while image recognition
into descriptions.
image utilization management was
chiefly restricted to image processing since the image
data was the only information to be managed by means of
appropriate data structures.
Hence, there was no need
for this technical term.
Though recent image recognition research has been pro-
gressing strongly it is true that most of the current
computer programs produce the desired results but at the
price of
- consuming considerable large amounts of time upon
manipulating non-pictorial
information,
- keeping the scientists busy with preprocessing, post-
processing, book-keeping and filing.
